Declutter Challenge: The Office/School Area

16 October 2009 7 Comments

3524862401_65452a40baFor this week, we are moving to the Office/Homeschool/Homework area!  Here are some great tips to think about:

When I have a system that works for a particular area, I will share it here…  But I am ALWAYS open to new ideas so if you guys have a great system that works for you for any of these areas in your home please send me links to pictures, or leave a comment with your genius in my comments section.

Things I try to remember when decluttering:

  • Be as brutal as I can be.
  • Things that are broken and/or don’t work should be tossed.
  • Make lists of things that are needed and be patient with filling those needs.
  • Try to be honest with the difference between needs and wants. Don’t declutter just to bring a bunch more in.
  • For at least a week, try to make do… sometimes I am amazed at what I find that will fill the void just by decluttering another space!

Office declutter challenge for this week (one for each day):

1.      School books and projects

2.     Art supplies (stored ones, too)

3.     Supplies (binders, paper, stored packing materials, shipping stuff, etc)

4.     Finished work

5.     Desk

6.     Bookcases

7.     Craft ideas

I just decluttered my office and although it was hard to throw stuff out I did it and it feels so new and fresh. Purging is always worth it after your done. I give away things we haven’t used in awhile to different charities so it’s a win win! Thanks for sharing your tips !

I packed up my living and dining rooms to do a reno. That was 6 years ago and I still have boxes of stuff (china, vases, glassware, etc) in the crawlspace that I occasionally might need but really, I’ve done fine without. I feel so much lighter without all the bits crowding my space I may never pull out the boxes. Decluttering is about being brutal, like you said, but it works.
I have to get into my office and do the same thing soon…
    Thanks for the reminder.

Great list! I will be redoing my desk area since we just replaced our printer, to ‘clear out the old’ and such. I love what you’ve got going on here, I love meeting people who like to clean and create lists just like I do :)

I like the way you have the area broken down over the week. My hubby is taking my son out of town this weekend, and I am planning to declutter the bedroom while they are gone. We have made some progress over the last few months, but I just want to get the last of it OUT OF HERE!
