We love shaving cream over here!  You can spray it on a table and let the kids get messy without any stains!  We also use shaving cream to make our paint last longer.  By mixing tempera paint into a cup of shaving cream, your paint will go farther, the colors will be more brilliant as they dry and the paint is no longer spill-able as the shaving cream makes it stick to the cup.  Depending on how much shaving cream you add to your paint, you can use the paint mixture for finger painting.  You can also add glue to the shaving cream paint mixture with the end result being puffy paint.

Here is an easy paper marbling project, fun for preschoolers and adults:

What you need -

• Shaving Cream (not gels)
• Paint (can be tempera or liquid watercolors, even food coloring)
• Cookie Sheets
• Paper (we liked cardstock the best)
• Paper towels

What to do:

Layer about an inch of shaving cream onto your pan.  Add your colors.  If you are using Tempera paint, drizzle it, if you are using food coloring add drops but make sure they are not too close to each other.  Swirl the colors together – we liked using our fingers!  Then, gently lay your paper on top of the “paint”.  Lift the page and you should have some residual shaving cream on it.  You can either let it dry overnight for a more intense look, or you can blot the page with a paper towel (so it dries faster – less messy this way – thanks DIY Maven for this tip).   Let the paper fully dry and viola!  You have marbled paper!

Variations:

One Teacher had her students take charcoal and make a city scape over the marbled paper to resembles a Van Gogh painting.
