Terrarium’s are a mini-ecosystem or earth in a jar.  They are fun to make and as a parent, I like the fact that the “garden” is contained.  Kiddos can look at it and touch the jars without getting dirty.

You’ll need the following:

• a glass or clear plastic jar/bowl
• a couple of handfuls of pebbles
• Charcoal
• Soil
• Moss or mulch
• an assortment of succulent plants

These terrarium’s fit perfectly into our “learning activities this week.  We are learning about dirt and the earth and about plants later on this month.  Here are instructions and several ideas on how to assemble your own “mini eco-system”.  Basically, you’ll want to layer the  terrarium’s “ingredients” in the order listed.  There are several variations of the mini-worlds.  Some people have put them in wine glasses, in apothecary jars, in soda bottles, fish tanks, glass candle holders, etc.  Be creative!

Thanks to Isobel’s momma for the picture of the egg Terrarium… it is by far my favorite.  We are making one out of a juice bottle this week.  They take a few weeks to mature, but I hope to have pictures of our own to add soon!
